Fragile Freedom

We often take it for granted that scientists are allowed to research and teach freely. However, academic freedom is in a very poor state worldwide. Especially in authoritarian states, researchers are systematically censored, persecuted and suppressed. With the live podcast format “Fragile Freedom”, con gressa, in cooperation with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, has brought this important topic to the stage and to end devices.

Refugee researchers and their stories

To this end, we spoke to researchers who are no longer able to work freely in their home countries about their experiences. At the heart of the project were five events at German universities, at which the conversations with the researchers were recorded in front of an audience. Visitors also had the opportunity to take part in the discussion. We then prepared and published these interviews as a podcast under the title “Fragile Freedom” in order to enable a sustainable and lasting engagement with the topic. With the help of the accompanying teaching material, school courses are given the opportunity to deal with the topic of academic freedom in the classroom.

“Fragile Freedom” was funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research as part of the Science Year 2024 – Freedom.
